Rules for Survival

Rules for Survival
Secrecy as protection
The Resistance instructs members to avoid digital tracking and tell no one what they know. Its rules respond to a network that appears able to monitor and influence Black women across workplaces.
The burden of obedience
Shani accepts the rules but finds them difficult to follow when people may be in danger. Secrecy protects the group while limiting what any one member can understand.
The group’s discipline is both an asset and a source of moral strain.
Watching Nella

Watching Nella
A cautious assignment
Shani monitors Nella and Hazel but is not allowed to approach Nella until Lynn believes she is safe. The assignment asks Shani to observe someone she increasingly fears may be in danger.
Doubt about delay
Shani wonders whether waiting is making the Resistance ineffective. Lynn’s experience with earlier betrayals makes her wary, but caution leaves Shani feeling powerless.
The conflict is between preventing a mistake and preventing harm that is already unfolding.
A Contact Against Orders

A Contact Against Orders
Shani acts alone
Believing Nella needs a warning, Shani texts her and agrees to meet near Broadway without permission. The action breaks the Resistance’s rules but follows Shani’s own ethical judgment.
A frightening consequence
Lynn discovers the meeting and orders Shani to disappear from view. Someone grabs her before she can escape, turning the rule-breaking into a physical crisis.
The event demonstrates that disobedience can expose a member while obedience may have left Nella uninformed.
Kendra’s Intervention

Kendra’s Intervention
An unexpected rescue
Kendra helps secure Shani’s release after the young woman is taken. Her intervention gives Shani access to a witness with direct knowledge of Wagner’s history.
Authority questioned
Kendra’s experience does not make her automatically trustworthy, but it gives the Resistance a new source of evidence. Shani’s survival also exposes the limits of Lynn’s control over the situation.
The rescue briefly turns the covert struggle toward cooperation rather than surveillance alone.
Disclosure or Patience

Disclosure or Patience
A plan withheld
Kendra asks Shani to wait for a plan that could cut the OBGs off from their supply. Lynn is not included, partly because Kendra believes she failed to protect Nella sooner.
Shani chooses exposure
Shani sends her article rather than continue waiting. The email fails, but her decision exposes a deep disagreement over who has authority to control the evidence.
The Resistance’s secrecy remains a strategy, not an unquestionable moral rule.
